How To Know If Your Lawn Has Rust Lawn Fungus

Rust Lawn Fungus

Turf affected: Bluegrass, Ryegrass, and Tall Fescue

Symptoms: Small yellow specks on leaves and stems develop into orange or red pustules. Heavily infected lawns may have an orange or reddish hue, and the lawn may begin to thin out. This “rust” will be visible on shoes and mowers after being on the lawn.

Disease occurrence: Summer to early Fall

Management: Rust develops during times of drought and lack of fertility. Ensure proper fertilization, the disease typically occurs due to lack of nitrogen. Collect and dispose of grass clippings when a disease is present and be sure to rinse off mower blades to avoid spreading the fungus after mowing the lawn. And always water deeply and less frequently in the early morning to help avoid diseases.
